A brief playbook for those critical first days in your new role, working to turn good intent into the real practice of making AI safe, secure and lawful.

By James Kavanagh

Congratulations, you're the new AI Governance Lead!

Now what?

You’ve been hoping for this day, working towards it, reading and absorbing, learning as much as you possibly can. You’ve probably even been advocating for this role to exist in your organisation. But what happens now?

Well, day 1 might find you sifting through draft policies, fielding unsure emails, uncovering shadow-AI projects and facing leadership’s mandate to “get AI risk and compliance under control”. The clock is ticking. There is so much to do. How do even start to transform good intentions into real, tangible AI governance, and do it fast? You know it’s make or break in 100 days.

🇦🇺 It's "AI Week" in Australia!

Australia has marked AI Week with a major governance announcement to establish a national AI Safety Institute in 2026 — joining the EU, US, UK, Japan and Canada in creating a dedicated, expert body focused on AI risk, assurance and regulatory readiness.

Housed within the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, the institute will monitor emerging risks, assess advanced AI systems, support cross-government regulation, and advise on when legislation needs to be updated. This builds on the recent release of AI Adoption guidance, and we're definitely looking forward to seeing the long-awaited National AI Capability Plan.
